Ethiopian government signed what is described as a “ceasefire” agreement with leaders of Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) who are based in Asmara, Eritrea, reported today Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).

As per the agreement, the ultra ethno-nationalist group is to renounce armed struggle and to operate peacefully and legally in Ethiopia to achieve its political goal although it is unclear if the party has formally abandoned its secessionist agenda. The party is expected to move to Ethiopia following this agreement and might not need to operate from Eritrea any longer.

The two parties are also to form a joint committee to oversee the implementation of the agreement.

Eritrean minister of information, Yemane Gebremeskel, called the agreement “Reconciliation Agreement” in his tweet:

Oromo Liberation Front was on the terrorist organization list of the Ethiopian government for a very long time until Abiy Ahmed became prime minister of Ethiopia; he mobilized his administration to scarp the organization of the list of terrorist which was approved by the Ethiopian parliament sometime last week.

It was yesterday that Lemma Megersa, president of Oromo regional sate, and Workeneh Gebeyeu, Foreign Affairs Minister of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia, traveled to Eritrea for the negotiation.

On the sidelines of their trip, the met with president Isayas Afeworki and reportedly discussed the implementation of a peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea although details are unavailable.
