Sebsebe Demissew selected as the member of The Royal Society

Professor Sebsebe Demissew, a notable Ethiopian scientist, is selected this week as a Foreign Member of The Royal Society, a British Fellowship program which was established in the pre-colonial era in the 17th century.

Sebsebe is a professor of plant systematics and biodiversity at Addis Ababa University. He also oversees the Gullele Botanic Garden in Addis Ababa and has led the Ethiopian Flora Project between 1996 and 2009.

In 2017, he was awarded prestigious Kew International Medal in a ceremony organized at the British Embassy in Addis Ababa. It is an award “…given to individuals for distinguished, internationally-recognised work aligned with the mission of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBGK), to be the global resource for plant and fungal knowledge, building an understanding of the world’s plants and fungi upon which all our lives depend, ” according the organization.

Kew international also noted that professor Sebsebe as published over 50 new plant taxa and species.

Sebsebe Demissew has a Ph.D. degree in Systemic Botany from the Institute of Systemic Botany at Uppsala University, in Sweden.
