President of Oromo regional State, Lemma Megersa, and Federal Foreign Affairs Minister, Workneh Gebyeu are in Asmara, to hold talks with Dawud Ibsa leader of the radical ethno-nationalist movement, Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). The organization is struggling to secede Oromo region from the rest of Ethiopia.
They were received by Eritrean Foreign Affairs Minister, Osman Saleh, and top advisor to the president, Yemane Gebreab, upon arrival at Asmara International Airport.
Lemma and Workneh are both parts of the leadership of Oromo People’s Democratic Organization (OPDO) that is governing the region and they were part of the entourage during Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s visit to the United States. And there are currently more than 10 ethnic Oromo political organizations.
Although Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), whose leadership is currently based in Asmara, recently disclosed “ceasefire,” there have been incidents of violence in some parts of Oromo region of Ethiopia which has caused concern among Ethiopians in the region.
Eritrea and Ethiopia have recently signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in a range of areas including security matters in the region.
