Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, who is in a six days tour to Africa, met with Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde in the capital Addis Ababa.
The president expressed Ethiopia’s interest in furthering relation with Ireland based on principle of mutual benefit.
The Irish Primer on his part express that Ireland supports political and economic reform measures that Ethiopia is under taking and is determined to deepen trade and investment relation, according to a report by Ethiopian State media, EBC.
He also seems to be keen to foster relation with Africa. RTE, Irish news source, quoted him as saying:
- “If we in Ireland and in Europe do not get more involved in this region and invest in this region, we risk opening a space for other countries to enter, be it China or Saudi Arabia or Russia. We need to make sure we are here and we are crowding in.”
Ethiopia and Ireland have only twenty five years of diplomatic relation. Yet, Ireland is one of the west European countries active in “development” work in the country.

Leo Varadkar also met with Ethiopia’s reformer Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed. The later reportedly said that the former’s visit to Ethiopia is a testimony that the relation between Ethiopia and Europe is stronger.
Ireland intends to continue “supporting” in Argo-processing Investment.
Last year, Ireland disclosed that it will donate €30 million through Irish Aid to support rural development, health and social services.
