Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Regional state parliament voted on the question of Sidama, one of over fifty language speaking groups in the region, today.
And the result is that constitutional processes and procedures will be adhered to address the question which means a referendum.
State affiliated media sources reported that two-third of members of the regional parliament voted in favour of the decision.
It is to be remembered that Sidama Zone council unanimously voted recently in favor of statehood.
Currently, Hawassa is the seat of Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Regional State which is governed by Southern Ethiopian People Democratic Movement (SEPDM) whose chairperson is one of the most powerful women in the current arrangement of Federal government power but with the decision today, the fate of Ethiopia’s resort city is not known as to whether it will continue to be a seat for SNNPR regional government if the outcome of the refurendum is for Sidama statehood.
Today’s decision was deliberated in accordance with the constitution, according to state media. However, SNNPR council is yet to chart out the next phase of the process.
A few months back, unconfirmed sources in social media reported that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was approached by Sidama Politicians and he was said to be in favor of “Sidama Question.”
Sidama Population is currently believed to be more than three million.
Recently, the region saw deadly ethnic based violence leaving dozens of people dead and thousands displaced which led to major power shake up the result of which was that major power players like Shiferaw Shigute had to resign.
