Mekelle University, in Tigray, northern Ethiopia, is hosting the 9th all African Universities games.
The opening ceremony was held yesterday at Mekelle University in the presence of authorities in the region including Debretsion Gebremicael ,chairman of the ruling party in Tigray, TPLF and president of the region.
He had the following to say in his opening ceremony speech:

“In the last century, one of Africa’s greatest challenge was foreign aggression. …one of the successful resistances that Africa won had happened in this very region [Tigray] where the 9th all African games is colorfully taking place . Yes, indeed I am remembering you of the great and iconic battle and victory of Adwa”
The 9th All African University games has drawn 57 universities from 18 African countries.
The games are running between July 1st and July 8 and a total of 500 athletes are taking part in the tournament in eight disciplines : athletics, badminton,basketball, chess,volleyball,handball,table tennis and tennis.
