Just a day after the resignation of prime minister Hailemariam Desalegn from the party and government responsibilities, Ethiopia is seemingly poised to declare a state of emergency.
Daniel Berhane is believed to a pro-TPLF government activist, he also runs Horn Affairs website, with access to confidential information. Soon after sharing updates about Hailemariam arranged, apparently, resignation, he shared the following update on his Facebook page :
- Breaking: #Ethiopia: A State of Emergency is in the works.
Addis Standard, local Magazine, cited what it called “a source close to the government” to report that the Council of ministers is set to declare three months of a state of emergency. The report added that two parties within the ruling coalition, namely Amhara National Democratic Organization and Oromo People’s Democratic Organization, opposed the decision to impose a state of emergency which is likely to be presided over by a governing body modeled after the one that presided over the last state of emergency which was in effect for nearly a year.
Reports emerging on social media seem to suggest that the security situation is deteriorating in the country.
The United States embassy in Addis Ababa issued a security alert yesterday saying that the resignation of Hailemariam Desalegne “may lead to unpredictable security issues”
The ruling coalition executives are reportedly in an emergency meeting to discuss, among other things, as to who is going to take over the office of the prime minister. That party has already announced that it has accepted Hailemariam’s resignation within hours after he appeared on state television to talk about it.
There are also rumors about the possibility of a military coup but political analysts seem to suggest that it will worsen the crisis and perhaps leave Ethiopia in a situation difficult to recover from.
