Ethiopian government reportedly issued around 30,000 emergency passports for undocumented Ethiopians who are given until the end of June to leave Saudi Arabia.

It is to be recalled that the Saudi Arabia government issued a decree in March of this year that it will deport undocumented immigrants should they fail to leave the country in three months time, which is considered as amnesty time by Saudi government.

However, a report by pro-Ethiopian government news source indicates that the number of Ethiopians who returned home since then is small compared to estimated number of undocumented Ethiopian migrants in Saudi Arabia.

Observers say, government in Ethiopia admitted it, that Ethiopian Embassy in Saudi Arabia is short staffed and unable to provide service even for those Ethiopians who seem to be alright with the repatriation order.

Hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians are believed to live in Saudi Arabia and yet many with no residence permit seem to be unwilling to accept repatriation order owing to gruesome situation in Ethiopia.

Desperation to leave Ethiopia is strong among the most productive section of the population, the youth, so much so that Ethiopians are still leaving behind their country for countries in the Middle East including Saudi Arabia which is expecting immigrants to leave the Islamic Kingdom.

With corrupt and ethno-eccentric government in place, Political repression and economic hardship are among the leading push factors in Ethiopia. The number of Ethiopians leaving the country is unprecedented in the history of the country.

Yonatan Tesfaye

Ethiopian Federal High Court sentenced Yonatan Tesfaye to six years prison terms after passing guilty verdict over his comment on social media. He was public relation of Semayawi (Blue) party, one of the registered oppositions in Ethiopia.

Yonatan Tesfaye’s activism on facebook were used against him in the charge “encouraging terrorism” which is part of the anti-terrorism legislation – a tool that government is using against political dissent in the country.

Yonatan’s lawyer, according to reports published by Addis Standard, is planning to appeal the sentence.

In a similar development, court passed guilty verdict against Getachew Shiferaw, editor-in-chief of the Negere Ethiopia newspaper, semayawi party’s voice. Amnesty International dubbed the verdict on Getachew as “slap in the face.”

Getachew Shiferaw - Ethiopian News
Getachew Shiferaw

Like Yonatan Tesfaye, he was charged with terrorism for a facebook comment he made when the late Meles Zenawi was confronted by activist and journalist, Abebe Gelaw, at a global forum in Washington DC. Later, the charge was relegated to “inciting violence.”

Getachew Shiferaw is to hear from the court regarding sentence.

Dozens of journalists and opposition leaders are languishing in prison in connection with tramped up charges of “terrorism.”

Gode -Ethiopian-Somali-army

Air force defense engineer reportedly killed ten members of the defense force during army meeting in Gode, South Eastern Ethiopia, according to ESAT report which cited anonymous sources from the Somali region of Ethiopia.

He is reported dead himself and ESAT report suggests two accounts regarding his death. Some of ESAT sources say that he killed himself after killing the soldiers, who are said to be of higher military ranks. The other account says that he was killed in action.

The report didn’t mention the name of the soldier.

What is known so far is that he was trained to be Air force engineer but was “demoted” to the infantry division and relocated to Gode, close to Ethio-Somalian border as a form of disciplinary action. He is known to be from Gonder region of Ethiopia and might have been linked to the stiff resistance against the regime in power.

No other media outlets reported about it.

Tomb of the late Asrat Woldeyes at Selassie

In what seem to be a far-fetched expression of hatred, the ruling Tigray People’s Liberation front administration now wants to anger Ethiopians in a whole new way ;demolish patriots tombs.

Ethiopian patriots are laid to rest at the cemetery in Selassie Menbere Tesbaot ( Trinity “cathedral”). The regime wants tombs of patriots be removed.

As you may see in the picture above, just one among the many tombs, the tomb of the late Professor Asrat Woldeyes is in the process of demolition.

No government authority officially said a word as to why the remains of those who served Ethiopia selflessly, and with courage, has to be humiliated.

TPLF reverting to ethno-supremacist belligerence

borkena, Editorial
May 27,2017

Abay Woldu, President of Tigray region, recently spoke to a group of visitors i Tigray from across universities in Ethiopia.

During a discussion with them, he told them that people in Tigray are not special beneficiaries,of course,he meant to say of the system. The view that it has a special benefit, he added ,is disseminated with the intention to incite inter-people,that is his word he used and he meant to avoid speaking of ethnicity which they kind of pioneered in in its politicized form in Ethiopia, violence. Conversation on whether Tigray has got special benefit or not is irrelevant as any argument for the proposition that it has not does not hold water.

In regards to the more relevant topic, ethnic politics, no leadership of TPLF can deny that Ethiopians have been clamoring for change along the line of doing away with politicized ethnic sentiment which TPLF essentially, unfortunately, interpreted as ‘neftegna’ politics.

Ethiopians’concern about ethnic politics was not informed by history as much as it is by politics and the future of Ethiopia. It was informed by the belief that politicized ethnic difference could plunge Ethiopia to a conflict that Ethiopia will not recover from. And when the wave rise against TPLF itself, it played possible “disintegration” card.

Indeed, omens of ethic conflict were observed in their strong form during the recent country wide protest. Despite Ethiopia is still under state of emergency, the TPLF regime ,however, seem to believe that it put down the movement in a way that it will never resurge. Perhaps that is why it reverted back to naked ethno-supermacist belligerence. At least three recent examples of it could be cited.

Bahir Dar City Club ( dubbed as Tana moged) traveled to Mekele, Tigray, for a scheduled, by Ethiopian Football federation apparently, soccer match with Mekele City team. What awaited Bahir Dar city team at Mekele stadium was typical TPLF ethno-supermacist belligerent attack. Tigrian spectators attacked players and their fans but four of Bahir Dar City players were red carded. The attack was serious and many sustained wounds. But when Ethiopian football federation looked into the issue, it fined Bahir Dar City football club about 450,000 Ethiopian Birr. Team attacked Bahir dar city. Team fined Bahir Dar city. That is how it is with TPLF belligerent ethno-chauvinism.

Ethiopian broadcasting corporation entertainment was to feature Teddy Afro interview regarding his new album which has become a hit in and outside of Ethiopia. Apparently, in an exercise of discretionary power, the interview was authorized by EBC officials who happen to be not from TPLF. After the interview, which was carefully done to avoid political content, belligerent TPLFies were not too happy that Teddy Afro is interviewed and they had, with seeming green light from their links in the top TPLF leadership, intervened to cancel scheduled transmission of the interview.

And yesterday, we heard that the administration ordered tombs of patriots at Selassie church in Addis Ababa be removed. All these are clearly an exercise of etho-supremacist chauvinism.

TPLF does not seem to realize it that if the youth reach to the point of losing total meaning in life and contemplate to end living in humiliation and leading a slave like existence, the outcome could be totally different. The Youth has nothing to lose. It is TPLF that should rather bother about losing.

Group of nurses in Australia conducted a research about regrets in life. They were interviewing old people just days before their death. One of many responses they got was that a man regretted that he lived in fear and tasteless life and told the nurses that he wish he lived a courageous and quality life even if it meant to be short.

One would wonder whether our generation will not have similar regrets in the end. At the same time, we may wonder whether new young, strong, and determined leadership capable of defeating selfishness, narcissism and hedonism, clearly among the many breading grounds of fear, would emerge to break the cycle of fear and living like slave and mobilize and give a blow to TPLF ethno-supremacist belligerence.

Ethiopian Railway Corporation is struggling financially

CEO of Ethiopian Railway Corporation, Dr, Getachew Betru, reportedly resigned his position. Apparently, his resignation was not expected.

It is to be recalled that he appeared recently before the Ethiopian parliament, which is entirely controlled by the ruling party, to report about the corporation.

It is also to be remembered that Getachewu Betru indicated in his report that Ethiopian Railway Corporation is struggling to pay debts and needed additional loans in hundreds of millions of birr to pay for new projects in the country.

His resignation is linked with possible friction with the ruling party officials over budgetary allocations for ambitious railway projects in the country.

Currently, Awash-Weldiya/Hara and Mekelle railway construction project is underway. While Chinese contractors are undertaking the Woldia-Tigray project, Turkish contractors are undertaking Awash-Woldia project.

The first Ethiopian railway line runs from Addis Ababa to Djibouti via Dire Dawa. It was project initiated by Emperor Menelik and was fully funded by Ethiopia with no loans from elsewhere.

Is Chinese Investment benefiting Ethiopia?

June 2,2017
borkena, Ethiopian News

According to Xinhua, Chinese investment in Ethiopia topped off 4 billion U.S. dollars. The news source cited Meles Alem,Spokesperson of Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry, to report that over 111,000 Ethiopians are employed as wage earners and as skilled man power.

China’s investment in Ethiopia started about twenty years ago.

While the ruling party is securing huge sum of loans for infrastructure development in Ethiopia, most of these projects are under Chinese firms in areas including road construction and railway construction. However, Chinese investors are also engaged in the manufacturing sector.

There has been accusation against Chinese investors related to abuse of workers in addition to underpaying them and government in Ethiopia is also criticized for not protecting the rights of Ethiopia.

(Video : Ethiopians working for Chinese firms. Source: Social Media)

What is clear is that Chinese investors have created a culturally Chinese labor relations in Ethiopian soil and the relation seem to be exploitative features(economic and cultural).

China has also become Ethiopia’s largest trading partner with volume of trade estimated to be over $6.3 billion.

In addition to Chinese, Turkey and countries in the Middle East have billions of dollars of investment in manufacturing, agriculture and real estate development, among other things, in Ethiopia.

ESFNA event a few years ago in Washington DC

Thirty-fourth edition of Ethiopian Sports Federation in North America ( ESFNA ) soccer tournament and cultural festival will kick off on July 2, 2017 in Seattle which is home to an estimated 50,000 or more Ethiopians. There seem to be much excitement among Ethiopians in Seattle that they are hosting the event.

The thirty-third edition was hosted in Toronto in July 2016.

Getachew Tesfaye, president of ESFNA , announced the news sometime in April of this year. Seattle hosted ESFNA thirteen years ago.

Through the event, Ethiopians in the diaspora celebrate Ethiopia’s heritage. The week long event is fun-filled activity with Ethiopian food, music, dance, trade fairs for Ethiopian entrepreneurs and small business owners. The event is also an opportunity for Ethiopians to network. Renton Memorial Stadium (map available here )is expected to be packed for a week.

The yearly sports festival attracts tens of thousands of Ethiopians from across the United States,Canada and even from Australia. The organization usually makes hotel arrangements for travelers with discount rates. This year, for example, ESFNA made deals with the Red Lion Hotel and Conference Center and the Double Tree suites by Hilton. But thousands of travelers make their own arrangements with friends and others book on their own.

Uber is title sponsor for this edition of ESFNA.

Brooke Steger,General Manager for Uber in the Pacific Northwest, is quoted by ESFNA as saying, “Uber is proud to support the tournament and thrilled that members of the ESFNA Board selected Seattle as the host city.” Apparently, Uber has made special discount for the event ; traveler will be able to use codes to get their discounts.

ESFNA usually picks guest of honors, paying for travel and accommodation, as key note speakers in the event. Selection process is merit based in relation to outstanding service to Ethiopia either in sports or some other forms.

Closing ceremony is on July 8,2017.

June 17,2017

As the deadline to leave Saudi Arabia, for Ethiopian immigrants who do not have permit to live in the country, approaches, Ethiopian Airlines is reportedly authorized to make 17 additional flights a week to Saudi Arabia.

The arrangement is only for the duration of time until the task of returning Ethiopians is completed.

The Airline announced 50 % discount fare for Ethiopian immigrants who want to return to Ethiopia. But there are reports that there are immigrants who are unable to afford even the 50 % discount fare.

There is only less that ten days before the deadline date which was issued some three months ago by the Saudi government. Saudi government wanted immigrants with no permit to leave the country.

An estimated 400,000 Ethiopians without permit are believed to live in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. But those who managed to return to Ethiopia in lieu of Saudi Arabia’s decree are said to be less than 100,000.

Deadline of the decree coincides to end of Ramadan fasting season and most government offices are expected to be closed for the holiday.

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a recent history of abusing Ethiopian immigrants.

Oral tradition has it, as published by UNESCO, that Fiche Chambalala is a commemoration of married Sidama women who visited parents and relatives annually. She brings “buurisam” to the family up on her visit. It is food made from false banana, milk and butter. The food is not only for the consumption of the family. It is shared among neighbors. Burrisam is still a big component of Chambalala festivity in addition to music and dance.
Horse ride and”Qetela” are parts of the holiday festivity. UNESCO registered Chambala as intangible cultural heritage.

Social inclusion, indicates writing by UNESCO, is a norm ; all members of Sidama community take part in the holiday regardless of age, gender and social status. Elders speaks to all community members to advise them uphold values enshrined in the community. Working hard and supporting and respecting elders are among the values promoted by elders. No hope for constitutional reform in Ethiopia

borkena, Ethiopian News
June 24,2017

Constitutional reform agenda rejected by TPLF / Ethiopia
Source : Fana

Ethiopian government announced agreed upon agenda for what it calls “negotiation” with opposition parties.

Dialogue with selected opposition parties in Ethiopia, which was started following popular protest which claimed the lives of thousands of Ethiopians,to identify agreed up on agenda for “negotiation.” As it turns out, any hopes for constitutional reform is dashed.

“After exchanging views on postponed draft agenda, parties identified and agreed up on agenda for negotiation,” wrote pro-government media outlet – Fana.

From the outset, critical observers and analysts have questioned the relevance of the negotiation process. What was questioned was whether it will bring about positive result in terms of creating genuine political space that will allow opposition parties to function with out fear of persecution.

If the outcome of the process whereby the ruling TPLF/EPRDF party and opposition parties selected agenda item for negotiation is to be a measure of significance, among other things, it is clear that the negotiation is simply ritualistic. It could rather give a little face saving legitimacy for the ruling party in the face of the international community, which is tacitly supporting the regime anyways.

What agenda are accepted by the ruling party ?

Agreement is reached to make Election law and election process related matters to make part of the agenda for negotiation. In that regards, political parties ethical regulations is expected to be raised during the discussion.

In terms of revising statues and laws, anti-terrorism legislation , mass media and freedom of expression , charity and charitable association laws , Tax laws and land land lease laws are selected as agenda items for the “negotiation.”

In relation to democratic rights and human rights institution structures , the rights of citizens to work in any parts of Ethiopia , national reconciliation , economic demands of citizens , structures of justice system and implementations of legislation are included as items of negotiation.

How ready is the ruling party to make notable changes even in the areas agreed as agenda item is something that remains to be seen . But it has to be noted that the ruling party has no history of being credible negotiating party .

Agenda rejected by the ruling party

TPLF/EPRDF government rejected proposals to make constitutional reforms agenda items in relation to to articles 39, 46 and 72 in addition to casting aside opposition party’s effort to make Ethiopia’s territorial boundary an agenda item. The ruling government is widely accused of handing over Ethiopia’s territory to Sudan’s Al-Bashir government as a cost of keeping Al-Bashir government an ally to the ruling TPLF party.

Also, the regime rejected “negotiation” on political prisoners and prisoners of conscience as it asserts there are no political prisoners or prisoners of conscience but convicts.

Human Rights organizations have issued numerous statements calling for the release of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience.

Ethiopia is still under extended state of emergency rule.

Many undocumented Ethiopian immigrants reportedly indifferent to extension of deadline by Saudi Arabia government

Saudi Arabia government announced an extension of deadline for undocumented expatriate workers in the kingdom.
Saudi Gazette cited Maj. Gen. Sulaiman Bin Abdulaziz Al Yahya, The Directorate of Passports, to report that government announced on Thursday last week that it extended deadline for illegal expatriates to voluntarily leave the Kingdom in a month time from the date of the expiration of the initial three months of amnesty period which ended on June 24.

The initial three months of “amnesty period” was announced by the government in March of this year. Government wanted all undocumented expatriate workers, from all countries,to leave the country voluntarily before facing forced deportation.

An estimated 400,000 undocumented Ethiopian migrants live in Saudi Arabia. But those who returned to Ethiopia during the “period of amnesty” are much less than 45,000 – according to government affiliated media.

Extension of deadline to leave Saudi Arabia met with, rather, indifference among undocumented Ethiopians. Many are determined not to return to Ethiopia. In worst case, Ethiopian migrants are thinking in terms of trekking to war ravaged Yemen instead.

However, there are reports that Ethiopian embassy in Saudi Arabia resumed processing travelling documents for those who want to return to Ethiopia.

Why the move to Oromize multicultural Addis Ababa is nonsense

$

Addis Ababa is Uniqely Ethiopian City

borkena, Editorial
July 2,2017

When fascist Italy introduced ethnic based administration in Ethiopia during the five years of occupation, it was in Addis Ababa that it got a blowing defeat as Ethiopian identity had prominence over ethnic identity among residents in Addis Ababa.

In fact, the ethnic administration was at odds with the entrenched strong sense of regionalism even in other parts of Ethiopia and did not work well for fascist Italy.

Reminiscent of persistent attachment to regionalism is apparent in Addis Ababa even in the post-Derg Ethiopia. Whether it is Cherkos, Ferensay, Merkato, Saris, Gulele or what have you, the name has more to do with regional affiliation traditions in Ethiopia than ethnic affiliation, something, so to speak, the regime in power tried to entrench. Historically speaking, the only exception was Tigray as the name intersects with both ethnic and regional sentiment. But even in Tigray, there used to be a peculiar sense of regionalism along district lines; Temben, Adwa and what have you.

Resistance to the occupying fascist forces was strong in Addis Ababa. And after two brave young Ethiopians, Abraham and Moges tried to assassinate Marshal Rodolfo Graziani in what is now Siddist Kilo, thirty thousand Addis Ababans were massacred in just three days. It is imaginable that those who paid in life in Addis Ababa didn’t vanish without trace; their descendants are likely to be among the generations of Addis Abaebe’s that came after.

Addis Ababa is truly Ethiopian in that people from all regions, mind you again that region was rather a cherished identity in the old days, settled as early as the establishment of Addis Ababa as menagesha. Addis Ababa’s nearly five million residents currently, which by the way is equivalent to the population in Tigray, are mostly descendants of first generation residents who moved from Wollo, Harar, Gojam, Gonder, Tigre, Arusi, Wellega, Shoa, Sidamo, Gamo Gofa and what have you. And people brought their ethnic culture along with sense of regionalism which is what makes Addis Ababa a truly multicultural city in the context of Ethiopian cultures. For example, the enterprenuerial culture of Gurage has shapped the city in a certain way and who would think Mercato without Gurage?

When the ruling Tigray People’s Liberation Front segmented the country along ethnic lines demolishing region based identity, Addis Ababa was the only place that retained its truly Ethiopian identity; cherished by all Ethiopians. The effort to introduce ethnic identity was by and large futile in a city that developed its own unique multicultural identity. For example, the Amharic language, which is the national language of Ethiopia, that is spoken in Addis Ababa is unique in that it has acquired words from different languages including Oromo language.

The regime in power shelved, so to speak, “constitutional” provision that it can pull for a rainy day. The Italian legacy of ethnic administration which is reintroduced after the fall of derg proved to be,in the end, ineffective for the regime as a playing card for power politics. Popular movements that led to an extended state of emergency legislation showed omens that the regime could rather be endangered as projected animosity between two major language speaking groups did not work so much so that it has to think in terms of bringing the new fight ethnic fight to Addis Ababa.

Article 49 of the current constitution granted “special interest” to Oromia region over Addis Ababa. Apparently, the piece of legislation is informed by the narrative that Addis Ababa “belongs to the Oromo” – which in a way assumed that Ethiopia is five times older than the time that TPLF spent in the wilderness as guerrilla group- which is illusion.

Recently, regimes’ council of ministers dusted off article 49 of the constitution, which theoretically robbed every proud Addis Abebe of heritage, to declare that “Oromia region” has “special interest” over Addis Ababa. Drafted legislation based on Article 49 of the Constitution is sent to the sham parliament and Urban committee to be adopted. The intention is essentially to demolish the Ethiopian character of Addis Ababa and Oromize it, culturally, in a way that it will not be a problem to TPLF whose affiliates have created immense wealth in the city over the past two or so decades through loot and corruption. But Addis Ababa is not an urban matter per se. It should be treated as Ethipoian Affair in a broader context and people from all over Ethiopia, from Sidamo or Gojam or otherwise, have interst in ; cultural, economic and social interest -among others.

Radical diaspora based Oromo activists appear to be elated that “speical interest of oromia” is pulled again by TPLF, which is trying to forge new alliance with radical groups- apparently. But they do not show it. What they show rather is interest to totally oromize Addis Ababa.

An article by one of the mouthpieces of ethno-radical oromo movement, Tsegaye Ararso, that appeared on Addis Standard, it was meant to set an agenda clearly, go further to claim that the “special interest” in not really “special interest” as the land, Addis Ababa, belongs to Oromo “if it was not for the legacy of imperial conquest.”

Through this article, the writer (of course the entire radical group) came up with a list of claims the linchpin of which is that it is “other groups” in the city that need to have special interest ,not “oromos”,as that land is “naturally”, God knows how, Oromo land. For this same group, “The contestation over the city is pivotal to the making or breaking of the Ethiopian state.” The article went to the extent of demanding the federal government to move the capital to elsewhere or pay rent to “Oromia.” This whole nonsense calls for a serious and organised action against ethno-radicals of all forms.

Impressionist Facebook updates and rituals of narcissism need to end and give rise to a serious, matured and sustained mobilisation to halt the demise of Addis Ababa as we know it.

Alleged terrorist charges against Tadesse Biru Kermso seem to have no connection with terrorism according to a ruling by magistrate court

 Tadesse Biru Kermso-
Ethiopian dissident Tadesse Biru

Ethiopian dissident in the United Kingdom who was charged by Scotland Yard with an allegedly terrorist offences is reportedly granted bail.

Tadesse Biru Kersmo,51, worked as a lecturer at Greenwich School of Management in the UK, was reportedly detained by Scotland Yard at the Airport upon his return from Eritrea, where he apparently met with Ethiopian rebels struggling to overthrow the regime in power in Ethiopia.

Charges against him include, “attending terrorist camp” – which is apparently a reference to his trip to Eritrea -,possession of articles that are deemed to be useful for committing or preparing to commit terrorist acts, about security and intelligence, urban guerrilla warfare tactics and sniper manuals.

From reports in Social Media, it seems the case that he downloaded downloaded the articles on his laptop and was found during check point search by security personnel at the airport.

After looking at his case, Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot ruled that the case is not suitable for trial before magistrate court. She rather referred the case for a jury trial.

She granted Tadesse Biru Kersmo bail subject to a £25,000 security according to a report by West Sussex County, as cited by Ethiopian Satellite Television.

He is a member and one of the leaders of Ginbot 7 movement – an opposition political entity under the leadership of former Bucknell University economics professor,Berhanu Nega.

The movement was founded after opposition leaders, who were thrown to jail for two years following vote rigging in the 2005 Ethiopian general election, were released from power.

Ethiopian government outlawed the organization as a “terrorist organization” and launched diplomatic campaign to lobby the US and UK governments to outlaw the organization which was not fruitful.

Another opposition figure,Andargachew Tsige, also a British national, was abducted by Ethiopian government who worked with in coordination with Yemen security. He was on his way to Eritrea.

Politicized Ethiopians questioned the motive behind “terrorist charges” against Tadesse Biru Kermso. A considerable number of them tend to think that partnership( political, military, security -among others)between the regime in Ethiopia and the UK government is stronger than the interest to see democracy and respect for human rights in Ethiopia. Some even went to the extent that the way the British government is treating Tadesse Biru is perhaps an indication of indifference towards the appalling situation of Andargachew Tsige.

All the seats in the Ethiopian parliament is under the ruling party.

Court rejected Professor Merera Gudina’s Statement of Defence . During his hearing, he recommended judges three readings and called on judges to remember history when passing their verdict.

The books he recommended for the judges to read are Abe Gubegna’s “Alwoledim” , Bealu Girma’s “Oromai” and his own political writing where he commented that a starving people would one day eat its own leaders.

He also told the court that he is a political prisoner.

“I am jailed because I stood for Oromo People. I am Jailed because I struggled for the entire Ethiopian people. I am jailed because I struggled for democratic Ethiopia for all Ethiopians. I spoke out that there is bad governance in Ethiopia and people are fed up of it. I am arrested for political reason. I am a political prisoner.”

Merera is a chairman of Oromo Federalist Congress and was arrested in November of 2016 upon his return to a working visit to Europe. Weeks before his arrest, he appeared before European parliament to give update regarding the human rights situation which was grave due to popular protests in most parts of the country. Well over one thousand people are reportedly killed.
