One sign that the ongoing political change in Ethiopia has not taken root is that the main task for opposition parties has turned out to be helping the government to ensure continuity of reform and change, not partisan politics aimed at gaining government power.

In fact, most of the opposition parties seem to have commitment for this task.

Arbegnoch Ginbot 7, which used to be an armed movement designated by former administration as a “terrorist group,” organized a concert today at the Millennium Hall in the capital Addis Ababa and it draw tens of thousands of audiences.

“Ethiopiawineten Enawedes” (it translates to “let us praise our Ethiopian identity) is the theme for the event.

The purpose could only be understood in consideration of the danger that ethnic politics is posing not just the reformist administration of Abiy Ahmed but also to the very existence of Ethiopia.

Because of politically motivated and manufactured violence, hundreds of citizens have been killed and millions have been displaced to the extent that Ethiopia is now the leading country in the number of internally displaced people in the world.

Berhanu Nega, leader of Arbenoch Ginbot 7, was one of the key speakers during event.

And his key message was “Every single citizen is responsible to ensure continuity of change in Ethiopia.”

Executive Committee of the ruling Coalition, EPRDF, issued a statement this week in which it highlighted external and internal challenges facing the ongoing reform and change in the country.
