A report by Bloomberg today, which cited anonymous sources within Saudi government, says that Saudi-born Ethiopian billionaire Al Amoudi is “still alive.”
There has been rumor in Saudi Arabia’s business circle that he is deceased, added the report.
The Saudi official who spoke to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity also said that he “would face trial in a Saudi court on a date yet to be confirmed.”
His spokes person has not remarked on the latest information about the business tycoon.
He was arrested in November 2017 at the Riz-Carlton hotel along with some Saudi Royal families and businessmen but was later reportedly transferred to Saudi’s maximum security prison.
With an estimated US $3 billion investment, his business empire in Ethiopia dominated manufacturing, gold mining (license not renewed after his arrest), agriculture, construction and hotel , among other things.
Ethiopian government has been making diplomatic efforts to secure his release. When Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Saudi Arabia in May of this year, with invitation from Saudi government, he raised the issue of Al-Amoudi. Up on his return, he told Ethiopians that he is sure that Al-Amoudi would be released.
