Ethiopia inaugurated Rib irrigation project in Southern Gonder

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, his deputy and Amhara regional state authorities including head of the regional state, Gedu Andargachew, inaugurated Rib Irrigation project earlier today.

Ethiopia’s water and Irrigation minister, Seleshi Bekele was also part of the ceremony.

During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy said “the government will work to improve livelihood of people through moving forward irrigational scheme and by promoting technological mechanisms of framing in the country,” as cited by Ethiopian News agency.

A total of 3.8 billion Ethiopian Birr is spent to make the project, which is located in South Gonder Zone of the region, a reality.

It was started in 2008 and its completion is delayed by about six years which incurred weigh more money than it was planned.

Up to 28,000 farmers, who are otherwise dependent on meager seasonal rainfall, are expected to be beneficiaries of the irrigation project in addition to protecting alluvial soil to deposit to lake Tana.

The regional state also aims fishing project over Rib Irrigation.

Another irrigation project is underway in the region which will irrigate over 11,000 hectares of land.
