Ethiopian parliament to appoint Federal Supreme Court Judges

Unconfirmed reports say that Ethiopian Parliament is appointing Meaza Ashenafi to the position. However, government media or bodies gave no clue about it.

Ethiopian parliament is expected to appoint Federal Supreme Court judges tomorrow, reported today state affiliated broadcaster, Fana.

The new judge will be replacing Dagne Melaku who reportedly resigning.

A report by Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT) says Dagne is known for his political loyalty, apparently for those who were in power before Ethiopia embarked on political transformation sometime in April of this year after the ruling coalition picked a new Prime Miniser.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who is on his way to Addis Ababa from a working visit to France and Germany in the last three days, will present tomorrow morning his new picks for the top position in the Federal High Court to the parliament for approval.

His government announced unprecedented gender balance cabinet about two weeks ago when he appointed 10 women to ministerial positions which is hailed the world over as a progressive move.

Last week, the parliament appointed the first women president, Sahle-Work Zewde – who was working as United Nations representative in African Union.

Unconfirmed news circulating in social media says that the new appointee for the position is Meaza Ashenafi.

Who is Meaza Ashenafi?

She is currently Advisor on Women’s Human Rights at UNECA, according to her profile on LinkedIn network.
She has an experience as a high court judge before she made transition to women’s rights activism.

Ethiopia’s prominent women rights defender, Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association, is the brainchild of Meaza for she was its founder. She has also led it as an executive director for nearly ten years.

Among the many success stories of Meaza Ashenafi is tha she represented the case of fourteen years old girl who killed the person who abducted and rapped her, which later came became an acclaimed film in the history of Ethiopia, Difret.

Meaza is also founder of ENAT bank and the Chairperson of the Board of Directors.

In 2017, she was the guest speaker at the Businesswoman of the Year Awards which was organized in South Africa.
