Days after social media campaign launched to demand the release of Youth from Addis Ababa who are reportedly detained at Tolay military camp, government says it will release them by this weekend.
Zeinu Jemal, Federal Police Commissioner, told Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC), as reported by FBC, “the youth who are detained have been taking various training,” including restraining oneself from “crime.”
According to Zeinu, the youth will be released latest by Saturday. He is also cited by FBC as saying that the government, in cooperation with Addis Ababa City Administration, will facilitate “employment opportunity” for some of the youth to be released from detention.
In a social media campaign launched two days ago, Ethiopian activists said the arrest of the youth and the circumstances under which they are detained constitutes not only violation of the country’s own constitution but also all international conventions and laws that Ethiopia has signed.
Well over 1200 youth were rounded by security forces about a month ago in Addis Ababa as they gathered to condemn the massacre in Burayu, in the western outskirts of Addis Ababa.
