As president Mulatu Teshome addressed a joint session of House of People’s Representative and House of Federation, he announced that Ethiopia is ready to waive the requirement for African travelers to Ethiopia to apply for a visa.
Accordingly, Africans will be issued with a visa upon arrival at the airport. The arrangement is not yet operational but will arrive soon.
The visa-free travel is expected to significantly increase the volume of travelers to Ethiopia which may mean an expansion of the tourism sector in the country.
In June of this year, Ethiopia started online visa service for tourists and travelers visiting the country.
Ethiopia’s decision to lax the visa regime is in line with the vision of the African Union which is encouraging other African countries to go Visa-free for Africans by 2020.
