Eritrean government sent a high-level delegation to Ethiopia again, the Eritrean government has announced thought the ministry of information, Yemane Gebremeskel.
While Eritrean Foreign Affairs minister, Osman Saleh, is leading the delegation, President Isayas Afeworki’s advisor Yemane Gebreab is a member of the delegation.
The delegates have already arrived in Ethiopia and they are expected to meet with senior Ethiopian government officials including Abiy Ahmed as they are delivering a message from President Isayas Afeworki.
Leaders of the two countries are expected to have talks on ways of implementing agreements reached in the areas of investment, trade including the use of Eritrean ports and border issue.
There are, however, views that despite the proximity of the port of Assab to Ethiopia, it might not be adequate to support existing Ethiopian trade before major redevelopment of port facilities.
The two countries have agreed to form a joint technical committee to oversee implementation of the agreement.
In early June, the ruling party in Ethiopia under the leadership of Abiy Ahmed announced that it will accept the Ethio-Eritrea boundary commission’s decision on the border which awarded the border town of Bademe to Eritrea – a decision that seemingly facilitated a rapprochement between the two countries.
President Isayas Afeworki has visited Ethiopia last month after Abiy Ahmed visited Eritrea.
Ethiopia and Eritrea have reopened their embassies in Asmara and Addis Ababa respectively. Ethiopian Airlines has started flights to Asmara as is Eritrean Airlines flight to Addis Ababa. Families that have been separated by the war for well over two decades have reunited. Ethiopians have started to travel to Eritrea for vacation.
