Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) lost Tesfaye Getachew who is said to be a notable reformer and one of the right-hand man of the region’s head, Gedu Andargachew.
He passed away in the United States on Wednesday. He was not sick for a long time and his death is seen as a sudden one. Based on a report by Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA), he was feeling unwell recently and traveled to the United States to pursue medication with the support of friends, family, and government as well. He was admitted to George Washington Hospital in Washington DC, where he died at the age of 48.
Medical condition that led to his death is not disclosed still which is causing skepticism if his death has something to do with poising.
He is survived by four children; three sons and a daughter.
Tesfaye Getachew joined Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (EPDM) in late 1980’s before its transformation to Amhara National Democratic Movement with the order of, many politicized Ethiopians seem to claim, with the order of the late Meles Zenawi as a precondition to joining an ethnic-based coalition of the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
Tesfaye has served in different capacities in the Amhara regional state. In his last role, he served as head of the central committee office of ANDM, public relation, and advisor on party structural organization.
Those who know the politics of ANDM and EPRDF say Tesfay was a stern and fearless voice in what many believed was a struggle against domination by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which represented only six percent of the Ethiopian population, on matters of equitable distribution of resources.
Tesfaye was also a staunch proponent of the political reform measure that is going on in the country.
The news of his passing came as his party, ANDM, is preparing for a major purge of those elements who are believed to be either uncomfortable with the ongoing political change and reform measures or working with some reactionary elements interested in reversing the popular change in the country.
The coalition between ANDM and OPDO ( Oromo People’s Democratic Movement) within the ruling coalition was a key factor for what looks like a change from within.
