Eritrea withdrew its troops from Ethio-Eritrean border – a move which Eritrean Press, believed to be affiliated with Eritrean government, described as ” a gesture of reconciliation” in its report yesterday. Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed is expected to command army chiefs any time to do the same.

Peace is reigning after the two countries decided to live behind the past, end the conflict and open a new chapter in the history of both countries.

Apart from the visits to Asmara and Addis Ababa by heads of stats of both countries, a series of confidence-building measures have been taking place in an effort to foster peace between the two countries.

Eritrea has re-opened its embassy in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is reopening its embassy in Asmara and has already named Redwan Hussien, who was posted as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Ireland, as ambassador to Eritrea.

Yesterday, Ethiopian Airlines resumed the flight to Asmara when it carried 456 passengers including former Ethiopian prime minister Hailemariam Desalegne. The flight was also carrying passengers who met their family members for the first time in more than two decades. The return trip brought 90 Eritreans to Addis Ababa who met their family members for the first time in nearly two decades.

Ethiopian Airlines has also announced that it is purchasing 20 % share from Eritrean Airlines and is also planning to commence tour operation to the resort city of Massawa.

Economy of the two countries is expected to benefit from the new relation. But what seems to be priceless and what is exhilarating people in both countries is that families and friends are reuniting. Many Ethiopians seem to plan their vacation to Eritrea already.

What was pronounced for two decades was difference. Now, that seem to be a thing of the past as activists and politicians are emphasizing more on the unity of the two people. And leaders, including, president Isayas Afeworki, seem to be taking that seriously this time around.
