Berhane Gebrekirstos, Ethiopian Ambassador to China, is called to Ethiopia. According to Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, a new ambassador is to be appointed to the post in the near future. However, the source did not spell out why the Ambassador is removed from the post in China where he stayed for more than a year now. The next Ambassador China does not seem to be named so far.
In addition to China, Berhane Gebrekirstos has served as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the United States and he was known to be the late Meles Zenawi’s confidant.
For many years now, Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) reserved the ambassadorship position in China for TPLF members.
Before Berhane Gebrekirstos, Seyom Mesfin, long time foreign Affairs minister and also one of the close confidants of the late Meles Zenawi, held the position for many years.
All Ethiopian Ambassadors to China in the last 27 seven years, that is since TPLF came to power, were exclusively from TPLF.
China has been the major source of loans to fund infrastructure projects in Ethiopia and many of the projects were contracted out to Chinese companies. China has also billions of dollars of investment in Ethiopia mainly in the manufacturing sector.
Ethiopians seem to believe that a huge sum of money amassed through corrupt means is deposited in Chinese banks.
