Prime minister Abiy Ahmed donated blood today to victims of grenade attack during solidarity rally on June 23,2018.
About 155 Ethiopians sustained light and life threatening wound as a result of the attack while two are confirmed dead in hospital. Six of the victims are in Intensive Care Unit of Tikur Anbesa Hospital.
“Ethiopia is starving love. Those who committed that attack meant to disrupt Ethiopia’s journey to love. But they didn’t succeed. They will only will when we quit the journey to love. We should not quit it. Mortality of man is inevitable. We do not hesitate to give our life to love and to our country,” said the prime minister in a remark he gave while donating blood.
Until six or so months ago, the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (TPLF)has been under the tight grips of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) which is believed to have looted the country at least US $50 billion. Despite losing much of the power it used to dominate in the Federal Government structure, it is believed to have a clandestine networks across the country. Ethnic-based violence in southern Ethiopia and the grenade attack on Saturday itself is linked to TPLF, according to some critical voices who now seem to be supporters of the new reform oriented administration.
Prime minister’s popularity is soaring even in the opposition quarter. What earned him the level of public confidence, even sort of personality cult, in such a short time is his message of unity and forgiveness. The country has been divided along ethnic lines in the past 27 years which has been, among other things, causing ethnic-based violence the country has never seen before in its long history.
When he appeared at the rally on Sunday, he was dressed in a t-shirt with the iconic image of South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela.
