One of the key changes in the new administration, despite the same party that ruled the country over the past 27 years, is appointment of new Director General to Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Service.

Mohamed Adem, served as head of the Ethiopian Air force, who is now in charge of the intelligence agency met with senior authorities in the organization.

He says that the mission of defending the constitutional order in the country need to be achieved in a manner of free from political partiality. The idea seem to be to make the agency a neutral organization that emphasizes professionalism and the interest of the country with loyalty to the constitution. In that regard, the agency is expected to undertake reform in accordance with recommendation from the executive body.

Getachew Assefa, who served as intelligence chief for well over two decades until he was replaced by Mohamed Adem some two weeks ago, is politburo member of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and an executive committee member of the ruling coalition, Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). Majority of Ethiopians tend to believe that the former director general is responsible for numerous atrocities committed in different parts of the country.
