Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, this evening a day after his the United States’ counterpart Rex Tillerson did so.
When Rex Tillerson was on his way to Addis Ababa, Lavrov was in Zimbabwe. He will meet with Hailemariam Desalegn and Workeneh Gebeyehu, Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Minister.
The business of his visit to Ethiopia is to talk on the bilateral relations of the two countries. Among other things, he is expected to discuss the implementation of agreements signed during the 5th Ethio-Russian commission, according to pro-government news source – Fana Broadcasting. The two countries have agreements in the areas of education, science, and agriculture. It has been reported earlier in the week that Russia is willing to build a nuclear facility for Ethiopia.
Ethiopia and Russia have 120 years of diplomatic relations, which is older than Ethiopia-US relation.
Rex Tillerson reportedly commended the way the Ethiopian government handled the crisis in the country and called for the state of emergency, which was decreed on February 16, to be shorter. Ethiopian government wants it to be in effect for six months. He remarked that the solution to the problem in Ethiopia is “greater freedom.”
