Colonel Demeke Zewdu court case is dropped but the Wolkait identity question is not resolved.

Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA) reported today that charges against colonel Demeke Zewudu,General Asamnew Tsige,General Tefera Mamo, Nigist Yirga ,Getachew Adamu,Atalay Zerfe and more than 90 others is dropped.
Some of the prisoners were detained on alleged grounds of suspicion of being Ginbot 7 members.
Others were detained in connection with the question of Wolkait, a region that Tigray snatched from Gonder region of Ethiopia after Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) took power in 1991.
Colonel Demeke Zewdu, who served in the Ethiopian army and as part of Ethiopia’s UN peacekeeping mission in Africa, was arrested after he exchanged fire with Tigray region security forces who sneaked to Gonder to handcuff him as prisoner.
Furthermore, committee members elected by the people in Wolkait to follow up the case of identity question with Federal institutions were arrested on alleged charges of being members of patriotic front.
General Asamnew Tsige and General Tefera Mamo were arrested on grounds of alleged coup attempt which was linked to Ginbot 7, an outlawed opposition movement with a rebel forces operating in Eritrea. They have been arrested since 2009.
The decision to drop the charges was passed by the Federal Amnesty Board. President Mulatu Teshome approved the proposed lists of names to be pardoned.
Not yet released but they are said to be released sometime next week.
While the release of prisoners is seen positively, government did not address the very causes the caused popular protest in different parts of the country, including the identity question of Wolkait people.
Government already declared a state of emergency today for the second time in two years but there are serious doubts if that will help TPLF dominated government, as many Ethiopians think, get away with popular demands.
Meanwhile, Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) is said to have completed its evaluative meeting. Gedu Andargachew, as has been rumored for several months, is removed from his position as president of the region.
