United Nations Secretary General appointed Dereje Wordofa of Ethiopia as Deputy Executive Director of UNFPA

United Nations Secretary General António Guterres appointed Dereje Wordofa of Ethiopia as Deputy Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), according to information published yesterday by the United Nations.

He is succeeding Dr. Natalia Kanem, Panama, who is now Executive Director of UNFPA. The headquarter of this agency is in New York.

The information published by the United Nations highlighted extensive work experience of Dereje Wordofa in the areas of advocacy, program development, strategic leadership, and Operation managerial experience in Africa. Altogether he is bringing to his new role more than twenty-eight years of experience.

In his latest position, he was serving as International Regional Director of Easter and Southern Africa Region for SOS Children’s Village international.

As well he has served as, among other things, Oxfam Country representative in Uganda and as Regional Director for Africa at the America Friends service committee.

Dereje has Master’s degree in business administration from Oxford University and Master’s in social policy from London School of Economics and a BA in Business Management from Addis Ababa University.
