Amid deteriorating security situation in Ethiopia, the US embassy in Addis Ababa continued to issue security alert for its citizens. In the latest statement issued today, the embassy updated citizens to be maintain vigilance.
The statement noted the situation in Ambo,Bako and Holeta towns and advised citizens of United States of America to “maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.”
A week or so ago, the embassy issued travel warning following the protest and road closure to Shashemene south of the capital Addis Ababa.
The statement issued today reads as follows :

The U.S. Embassy is aware of reports of violent protests and road closures in the areas of the region of Oromia near Ambo, Bako, and Holeta, west of Addis Ababa.
U.S. Embassy personnel are permitted to travel to these areas on a case by case basis only. If you are currently in Ambo, Bako, Holeta, or their surrounding areas, please use extra caution.
As always, review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.

The town of Ambo, west of the capital Addis Ababa, is carrying on with anti-government protest calling for the release of political prisoners including Merera Gudina who has a strong support base in the town. Two days ago, protesters blockaded road, seized trucks loaded with sugar and confiscated the sugar.
