The Ethiopian Customs Commission this week announced that it has seized over 110 million birrs worth of smuggled goods in customs branches in different parts of the country.

A report by Ethiopian News Agency, state media, indicates that the items were seized in less than a week between August 5 and August 11.

The government claimed that goods that are worth 90.8 million birr are said to be goods that were meant to be smuggled into Ethiopia while the remaining 19.9 million birr worth of goods was meant to be smuggled out of Ethiopia.

The source added that nine individuals were arrested in connection to it. However, the identity of the suspects is undisclosed.

Clothing, fuel oil, cattle, electronics, coffee, medicine, cosmetics, firearms, Khat, drugs, hard currencies and cooking oil are among the items seized – according to the ENA.

Customs office clerks, Federal police and regional police (unspecified) cooperated during the operation, it was said. The government also claimed that it got support from the public.

From the report, some of the items were seized at the airport.

Ethiopia has been struggling with an illegal circulation of firearms and hard currencies for at least three years now.
