Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Saturday led a delegation to the United Arab Emirates for a working visit. Gulf News, UAE news source, reported that the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, received the PM and the delegates.
Abiy called the reception warm. “My greatest appreciation to my brother His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan @MohamedBinZayed for the warm welcome accorded to my delegation and I. We discussed bilateral and regional issues as well as explored ways of further strengthening our ties,” he said in a Twitter message.
The two leaders had a meeting, shortly after the reception ceremony, the focus of which was to evaluate the bilateral relation and explore ways for strengthening it further.
The Crown Prince said, “I was pleased to meet with Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, in Abu Dhabi, where we discussed ways to further strengthen the close ties that exist between our two nations and to promote stability and development in various fields.”
The cooperation between the two countries is said to have demonstrated notable progress in the past few years in a range of areas including investment, trade and agriculture, among others.
Ways of further strengthening the relationship in the areas of development and economic sectors are also discussed, based on the report from Gulf News.
The United Arab Emirates is one of the countries in the Gulf region with a huge investment in Ethiopia in the areas of real estate, manufacturing and agriculture. UAE is said to have plans to invest more – especially in the agricultural sector.
Soon after, the now defunct ethnic party coalition, EPRDF, picked Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister to replace Hailemariam Desalegne in 2018, UAE pledged $3 billion in grant and loan to ease the foreign currency crunch. $1 billion was reportedly wired right away.
