Sudan is reportedly seeking the evacuation of Russian equipment shipped to Port Sudan for building a military base in the region.
Sudan Tribune, Sudanese News source, cited Asharq newspaper to report that A Russian Lt. General at Post Sudan was summoned and informed about Sudanese government’s decision to stop the deployment of Russian Flamingo Military base.
Furthermore, Sudan “requested the Russian general to withdraw all the military equipment, radars and communication devices that had been installed at the base,” as quoted by Sudan Tribune.
However, the Russian Consulate in Khartoum did not confirm the news. It dismissed the news as “unfounded” on grounds that the embassy is not notified about it.
The Russian military equipment meant to be used in building a military base in the Red Sea area was said to have been sent to Port Sudan.
Sudan agreed that Russia build a military base during the leadership of ousted President Omer al-Bashir. But the Sudan Tribune said that there were reports that sometime last week regarding the suspension of the agreement between the two countries.
Russia was to have four ships and 300 Russian troops, it was added.
If true, the decision came at a time when the U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman is visiting countries in the region including Sudan. According to information from the US embassy in Addis Ababa, he is visiting Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudan between May 4 to May 13, 2021. Ethiopia’s Dam project turned Sudan and Egypt into allies to a point that they signed military agreement in March of this year.
Russian Stand of Grand Renaissance Dam negotiation
The U.S. has been tacitly supporting Egypt’s quest for monopolistic control over the Nile River, the longest river in the world 85 percent of which originates from Ethiopia.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam – a mega dam which Ethiopia is building close to the Sudanese border – has brought about dispute between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan.
Sudan and Egypt want the United States, which is currently an observer in the negotiation, to have an African Union level role in the negotiation – something that Ethiopia has rejected on grounds that African problems need an African solution.
Russia supports that the African Union is the right platform to facilitate negotiation between the three countries. The position is justified that the three countries have representations in the African Union.
