Good Friday, known locally as Siklet which translates to crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ, is celebrated across the country. It is a day of fasting, intense prayer and prostrations.

Followers of Ethiopian Orthodox Churches share the religious tradition with other Orthodox Churches. In Ethiopia, churches outside the Ethiopian Orthodox Church including Catholic celebrate the good Friday along with the Ethiopian Church.

A national prayer was decreed well before Passion Week, the week after Palm Sunday, due to the national security crisis in the country. Ethiopia has been facing a series of internal and external challenges including massacre of innocent civilians based on ethnicity ( mostly targeting Amhara) and the humanitarian situation in the Tigray region where there has been law enforcement operation against Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces.

Religious leaders from different church denominations reminded followers about the meaning of the crucifixion.  It is preached as an act of love for mankind.

Passion week in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church tradition is  known as “Semone Himamat” – which translates as the week of pain.  Ritual practices throughout the passion week are meant to commemorate tribulations the Lord Jesus Christ went through including the crucifixion in Golgotha.

Ethiopian Easter is celebrated this coming Sunday.

From socio-economic trajectory, inflation and price hikes made celebration of the Holiday. Reports even on state media indicate skyrocketing prices for food items that have a high level of consumption during holidays.
