Gen. Kedir Ararso sought bail rights — something a court in the Ethiopian capital in Addis Ababa denied

Maj. General Kedir Ararso was serving as logistic head of the northern command of the Ethiopian Defense Force whose several military bases in the Tigray region were attacked on November 4 — which triggered a war that lasted for two weeks.
The Ethiopian government arrested the general after suspecting him of the involvement in the plot to attack Ethiopian Defense Force, and also for the role he allegedly had during what the government calls the massacre of Ethnic Oromo in the Somali region of Ethiopia. He is said to have allied with the then Somali region president, Abdi Illey, who is currently in prison.
He appeared at Arada court on Wednesday, according to a report by Ethiopian Broadcasting corporation. Police accused him of coordinating with Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) to challenge the constitutional order in the country by planning forceful actions in Addis Ababa and other parts of the country. He is also accused of treason charges.
When the Federal government wanted to move heavy weaponry from Mekelle region to central Ethiopia following the peace deal with Eritrea, Maj. General Kedir Ararso was among the treasonous military officers who opposed government decisions and even organized officers for that purpose, according to narrative from the government.
Police requested 14 more days to finalize the investigation but the court allowed only eight more days.
The Defendant denied the charges. “I was out of the country since July 2012 [July 2020 in G.C] for medical treatment and that I do not accept the charges,” Maj. Gen Kedir told the court. He also applied for a bail right which the court rejected on grounds that the crime he is suspected of is of serious nature and the bail right could negatively affect the case.
