Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) reportedly fired three rockers at Bahir Dar, presumably from Mekelle as the rest of Tigray region is under the control of the Ethiopian Defense Force.
The attacks apparently targeted civilian areas. According to a citizen’s report on social media, one of the rockers landed on a maize farm outside Bahir Dar. The other one landed on a weeded out water hyacinth, and the location of the third one is unknown yet.
It is for the second time in less than a week that TPLF fired rockets in what seems to be a retaliatory measure of the losses in a battleground against the Ethiopian Defense Forces. It has lost control of a number of cities in the region including Shire and Aksum.
On November 14, TPLF fired rockets at Eritrean capital Asmara and two Ethiopian cities (Bahir Dar and Gonder). The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, condemned the attack on Asmara calling it an “attempt to internationalize the conflict.”
The rockets and missiles were initially in the hands of the northern command of the Ethiopian Defense Forces. TPLF took control of them when it attacked the bases unexpectedly on November 4, 2020, as many of the soldiers were sleeping unse. Hundreds, even thousands, were massacred in the incident – an incident that triggered a response from the Ethiopian government.
On November 18, Ethiopian authorities said that the Ethiopian Defense Force controlled several towns in the Tigray region and is advancing towards Mekelle.
Chief of Defense Staff, General Berhanu Jula, had a press conference on Wednesday. He said that the Defense Force is undertaking its final operation, and is encircling the TPLF leaders.
