Ethiopian Defense Force is advancing towards Mekelle, the seat of TPLF administration

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Sunday that the law enforcement operation (there are groups that consider it as a “war against the people of Tigray) in the Tigray region is progressing well.
“Our campaign in the Tigray Region to uphold rule of law is progressing well. Justice will prevail. Ethiopia will prevail,” he said in a message he shared on his Facebook page.
His message came on the day the Ethiopian Defense Forces and Amhara region special forces and militia took control of Alamata and Waja towns in what is called “South Tigray.” These are towns that were under the TPLF administration for well over two decades.
TPLF lost control of the city days after it fired rockets at Bahir Dar and Gondar cities, and a day after a rocket attack on Asmara, the capital of Eritrea.
“By advancing rule of law and holding accountable those that have been looting, destabilizing Ethiopia, we will lay the foundation for lasting peace & harmony,” Abiy Ahmed added in his message.
He stressed that no external support is needed for the operation against TPLF leaders who are hiding in the Tigray region. He said, “Thanks to the exceptional valour and commitment of its sons and daughters, Ethiopia is more than capable of attaining the objectives of the operation by itself.”
The supporters of TPLF have been accusing him of conducting a war against “the people of Tigray.” Some say so based on the assumption that there is no distinction between the people of Tigray and TPLF. Others say that closure of roads to Tigray from a different direction is a testimony that that operation is against the people of Tigray.
Meanwhile, there are reports that Uganda is working to mediate TPLF leaders and the Ethiopian government. Mediation efforts for nearly two years in Ethiopia did not bear fruit and the situation finally led to war when TPLF took what it called a “pre-emptive blitzkrieg attack” against the northern command of the Ethiopian Defense Force in the region(TPLF admitted that it started the war).
The attack on the defense force outraged many Ethiopians and public opinion does not seem to support negotiation with TPLF. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed himself said earlier this week that there will be no negotiation with what he called “TPLF junta.”
