Police at Kaporo post in Karonga district have arrested 76 Ethiopian nationals who entered the country illegally.

According to police, the group was found in Chisi Forest bordering Chitipa and Karonga districts after getting tips from well wishers.

Officer in-charge for Kaporo Police Post, Robert Chiotcha confirmed the development saying police investigations point that the group was heading to South Africa.

“After getting a tip off, we teamed up with our colleagues at Songwe boarder together with the immigration department, and we began the search. We found them in Chisi Forest. After checking call logs on their phones, most of the contacts are those of relatives and friends in South Africa,” said Chiotcha.

One of the illegal immigrants who could at least speak English said the people who aided them entry, dumped them in the forest and they were stranded.

Police have since warned the syndicates aiding and abetting these illegal immigrants to stop the malpractice as it is against the country’s laws.

“We will not tolerate such lawlessness. Facilitation of illegal immigration in the country is illegal,” said Chiotcha.
The 76 are scheduled to be repatriated.
