Gebru Asrat was once the president of Tigray regional state. Currently, he is among the leaders of ethnic Tigray opposition operating in Tigray region known as Arena Tigray.
He recalled that TPLF promised to broaden the political space since Debretsion Gebremichael became president of the region and chairman of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
However, Gebru said, the repression in Tigray is rather getting worse. He said that opposition political parties in the region are treated as enemy and traitors ; traitors to the “cause of Tigray”
He also mentioned that TPLF is using threat of being invaded, from what they call Shaebiya (the major political force in Eritrea under the leadership of president Isayas Afeworki) and also from the south – Amhara region.
Gebru said that he does not believe Amhara people could be a threat to Tigray region. He portrays the trend as the works of political elites.
He also unveiled that new secessionist sentiments are on the rise in Tigray region. Ethnic Tigray political elites are mobilizing for that. He was infact more explicit as he was saying that former TPLF leaders are behind mobilizing for the secessionist trend. Chairman of TPLF, Debretsion Gebremichael, has confirmed that there is a rising sentiment for secession when he had an interview with Ethiopian Reporter back in June of this year.
