TPLF central committee says that existing political crisis could get worse and lead to disintegration of Ethiopia if the ruling coalition is transformed into a united party

Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) central committee has completed on Tuesday a meeting that has been going on for seven days in Mekelle, the region’s capital.
The committee has identified “political and development work” to be undertaken in the 2012 Ethiopian year (2019/20120 GC).
It has also reflected on what the party has done during the last year. “The campaign to subdue the people of Tigray and TPLF from a different direction was a challenging one,” it was said. Yet, the party managed to overcome it with a “humble” concerted effort. However, what lies ahead, it said, could be even more challenging and called upon the people of Tigray to step up the struggle.
A long statement the committee issued, which is shared on the region’s Communications Affairs Bureau page on social media, highlights mostly what has been done and what is planned for the year ahead.
However, one thing stands out from it, and the matter has become a talking point among Ethiopian on social media.
TPLF officially, and vehemently, opposed the move to transform the ruling coalition, which constitutes three ethnic-based and one multiethnic party, into a single united party.
Explaining why the party opposes unity within the ruling coalition, the Central Committee of TPLF said that parties with opposing values can not form one single party.
If they, the statement said, it will cause an end to Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), and also an end to Ethiopia.
In other words, TPLF said that if members within the ruling coalition form a single party, it will lead to the disintegration of Ethiopia. TPLF itself is a member of the coalition. The ethnic Tigray party that is still governing the region said creating a united party requires unanimity on ideological, program and strategy
It also said that the move to form a united party lacks “legitimacy.”
The rest of the coalition members of the ruling party do not seem to have a pessimistic view of the projected transformation from a coalition to a united party.
The ruling party said that it has conducted research about it and the result suggests that unity within the ruling coalition could actually lead to national unity – perhaps thereby admitting that Ethiopia’s national unity is challenged by the existing political arrangement.
