Nobel Peace Prize winner, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, is launching his book Medemer in twenty cities in Ethiopia. His 297 pages of book explains his governance philosophy.

Barely a week after winning the Nobel Peace Prize, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s book is scheduled to be launched this Saturday.
Entitled as “medemer” – literally means addition -but it is also translated as synergy, the book is published in three languages- Amharic, English and his mother tongue Afan Oromo.
The number of copies for the first edition is said to be one million and the book was said to be published outside of Ethiopia.
It will be launched across 20 towns across regional states in Ethiopia, according to a report by state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporation (FBC).
Addis Ababa, Semera, Adama (Nazret), Jima, Bahir Dar, Hawassa,Dire Dawa, Assossa, Jijiga and Harar are some of the cities where a book launch program is planned.
Book launch is even is also planned for readers overseas. In the United States, Washington DC,Los Angeles and Minnesota will have book launch events, according to the source. As well, there is a launch event in Nairobi, Kenya.
It is, however, unclear if the Prime Minister is going to attend the events.
The book is named after what is believed to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s political philosophy – Medemer. The idea resonates with unity which has been a very cherished ideal in Ethiopian society.
However, the ruling coalition, Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), came to power under the leadership of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in 1991, tended to see Ethiopian unity as an imposition from “neftega” – implies ethnic Amhara from their perspective.
As part of the work to weaken what they thought was Amhara engineered unity, TPLF dominated EPRDF divided the country along ethnic line creating nine ethnic-based regions.
The upshot is that ethnic-based violence becomes across Ethiopia so much so, among other things, as many as three million Ethiopians were internally displaced.
The depth and width of Abiy Ahmed’s Medemer philosophy is not much known except that it is the overarching principle of his government.
The expectation is that his book to be launched on Saturday will be able to shade the light if his principle of medemer fits very well with the cherished value of Ethiopian unity or it is otherwise.
