Baladra council disclosed on Saturday that many members who were organizing a demonstration for Sunday at Meskel Square are arrested.
A report by DW Amharic who cited activists Eskinder Nega, leader of Baladera council, has confirmed that many of its members and supporters are arrested in Addis Ababa. However, he did not confirm the exact number of people arrested.
On the other hand, Addis Ababa police said on its Facebook page on Saturday that “the information circulating on social media regarding demonstration in Addis Ababa on October 13, 2019, and road closure in incorrect information.”
Baladera council said on Friday that the demonstration will not take place if police are prohibiting it but it is unclear if it is canceled.
In another development, roads between Gojjam and Addis Ababa, Addis Ababa – Debre Berhane are reportedly closed on Friday and Saturday. Citizen reports on social media say that radicalized Oromo youth who are believed to work in coordination with radical ethnic Oromo nationalists within government and in the opposition are said to be behind the road closure.
However, government media or affiliated ones did not report about it.
