Amhara regional state court in Bahir Dar adjourned court hearing of Brigadier General Tefera Mamo and et al case. Defendants are to appear in court again on October 23, 2019 – according to a report by Amhara Mass Media Agency.
The region’s attorney general and police investigation team asked the court for an extension of dates “to complete investigation” but the court did not allow it.
The court has also ordered the attorney general and police to lay charged on October 23. The court said that the suspects have been in custody for 64 days and the remaining witnesses that the investigation team is to hear from are small in number.
General Tefera Mamo and Colonel Alebel Amare, among others, are behind bars on grounds of suspicion in connection with the June 22 incident in Bahir. On that day, the president of the regional state, Dr. Ambachew Mekonnen, and his advisor, Ezez Wasse, were killed while having a meeting in the office of the president. The region’s attorney General, Migbaru Kebede, was seriously wounded from the attack and died from the wound a day after the incident. Hours after the killing in Bahir Dar on June 22, the country’s chief of staff of the defense force and his retired friend were gunned down in the capital Addis Ababa in the residence of the former.
The Ethiopian government and Amhara regional state described the killings that shocked the entire country, as an attempted coup d’etat.
There have been persistent voices in Amhara region of Ethiopia and in the cyber world that clamor for the release of General Tefera, and Colonel Alebel Amare who were all top authorities working in the security apparatus in the region. General Tefera was in charge of the region’s special force.
Supporters claim that General Tefera Mamo and Colonel Alebel Amare are innocent and they see a possible plot behind their arrest targeting to weaken the special forces in the region.
As the suspects appear in court on Tuesday, October 8, 2019, hundreds of thousands of their supporters were chanting outside the courtroom demanding their release.
Meanwhile, Amhara regional police said that it has killed Major Aschalew Dessie in South Gonder area of the region. Police claimed that Aschalew opened fire on security forces to which the security forces had to respond, and he was killed during an exchange of fire.
