A court in Bahir Dar, Amhara regional state, adjourned the case of Brigadier General Tefera Mamo and co defendants for August 27, 2019- reported Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA).

The court reportedly said that it needs to examine the case very well and additional evidence is needed before the verdict is passed.

On the other hand, lawyers of the defendants asked the court to order the return of Bank account books and clothing of their clients which they say is in the hands of police. The lawyers argued that the items have nothing to do with the case.

Police stated that it has no opposition if clothing and bank books are returned to suspects. However, police also mentioned the possibility that the money in the bank could be frozen if necessary.

The court ordered that the bank book should be returned to the suspects, in accordance with legal procedures, if their families do not have other means of income, according to a report by AMMA.

In a related development, DW Amharic service reported on Friday that police attacked families of suspects in the premises of the court.

Journalists who were in the court to report on the court proceeding were also reportedly harassed.

Police resorted to beating act after families and supporters of the suspects chanted slogans demanding for their release. “Release our hero,” were the words of families of suspects, according to DW Amharic report.

Families of the suspects who were taken to hospital told DW Amharic correspondent, Alemnew Mekonnen, that they were beaten by AK 47 butt and police club.

Another family member of the suspects said that he was slapped and clubbed by the police.

Brigadier General Tefera Mamo was head of Amhara region special forces. He is arrested in connection with the June 22, 2019 incident in Bahir Dar and Addis Ababa which Federal and regional government authorities described as a “coup d’état.”

General Tefera Mamo was behind the bars for more than 9 years and released when Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) lost its domination of central power.

Colonel Alebel Amare is another suspect linked to the June 22 incident.  He abandoned life in the Diaspora and returned to Ethiopia after Abiy Ahmed became prime minister, and he came back with the intention to serve in Amhara regional state and was given a role in the security structure.
