Yesterday, Hailemariam Desalegne inaugurated Gibe III dam which is located in Southern Ethiopia between Wolayta and Dawaro.
The dam is said to have a capacity to generate 1870 mw of electric power – which will boost power supply in the country by about 94 percent, according to VOA Amharic report. The Dam contains 14 billion metric cubic of water. The construction took about nine years.
The government plans to export power to the neighboring region.
The Dam is the the largest dam in the country at present and will be second largest if Renaissance Dam is completed.
The dam projected generated a great deal of critic from international environmentalists and human rights defenders who opposed construction of the dam on grounds of forced displacement of locals. As well, it is said to have negative environmental implications.
