Ethnic Oromo students at Haramaya University, in Harar – South Eastern part of Ethiopia, reportedly clashed with police on Tuesday, according to citizen’s report on social media.

A report by Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT), citing its sources from the region, says the clash left over ten students wounded and they are admitted at Harar Hiwot and Fana hospitals.

Ethnic-Oromo students at Haramaya University were demonstrating in the university campus chanting the slogan that “Addis Ababa belongs to Oromo.”

The protesters have reportedly destroyed property in the university campus but not much is known at this time regarding the extent of the damage.

Classes are discontinued and some students have reportedly left campus out of security concerns.

Government media outlets did not report about the issue until the publication of this post nor government authorities have remarked on the situation.

Some federal authorities including Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed have disclosed their position on the matter. They believe that Addis Ababa belongs to all Ethiopians. Oromo Democratic Party, on the other hand, has issued a communique in early March stating that it will work to ensure that ownership of Addis Ababa belongs to Oromos.
