The resignation of Gedu Andargachew as president of Amhara regional state president and his replacement by his colleague in ADP, Dr. Ambachew Mekonneon, who has been serving in the Federal government as infrastructure adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, seemed like a concomitant process that both news emerged at the same time in the last day of Amhara Regional Council’s congress on Friday.
Same day a farewell party was organized for Gedu at Avanti Blue Nile Resort hotel in Bahir Dar which was attended by the Prime Minister, on short notice as indicated Amhara Democratic Party (ADP) leaders.
At the Federal government level, the news broke that Workneh Gebeyehu is leaving the ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry and that he is appointed as Director-General of United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON).
Gedu Adargachew is expected to be assigned to undisclosed post, likely within the Federal government. It remains unclear if the shake up is part of the move to address what critic calls unfair distribution of power in favor of Oromo Democratic Party (ODP).
Gedu thanked different entities for the support during his tenure as president and he asked for same support be extended to the new Prime Minister Ambachew Mekonnen.
In his first speech as president of Amhara Regional State, Ambachew identified political, social and economic priorities. The political one seems to be rather focused on a country wide change.
Making contributions, as ADP leaders and leader of Amhara regional state, towards the fight against radicalism and towards ensuring peace and freedom of movement of Ethiopians will be pursued, said Ambachew. Creating investment conducive environment is another objective the new president intends to pursue as part of expanding manufacturing activity and job creation strategy.
Within the region and from the point of view of economic and social development, Ambachew said that he will be working to fill gaps in infrastructure development including electricity and roads, among other things. Also, ensuring peace and rule of law in the region and creating leaders capable of ensuring continuity of change in different levels of the regional administrative structure are some of the priorities he mentioned in his speech.
As well, he emphasized that he will work on renewing the multi-faceted unity and brotherhood with the people of Tigray, and also works with the rest of Ethiopian to ensure freedom, justice, equality and mutual benefits.
