ADDIS ABABA – Captain Hagos Misgina was a military officer with the UN peacekeeping force deployed in Darfur, Sudan.
Trained as an engineer, he was hopeful one day he would be working for the military industry or else with a civilian company in Addis Ababa.
Almost every month, Captain Hagos would call him mom that he has sent her money, and she should collect it from a bank in Adigrat, the biggest town from Alitena, the town of the beautiful Irob people.
Her son was the only means of income that has kept her alive.
But at one time in 2011, Emama Hadas failed to receive calls from her son for over three months. It was very, very unusual for Captain Hagos Misgina to abandon his mom who had no one to help her but him.
Emama Hadas informed those family members near and far, that her UN peacekeeping son has disappeared, and they should start asking for his whereabouts.
The journey started from searches in Adigrat to Mekelle, and from there to Addis Ababa where the Defense Ministry that deployed the officer to Sudan is located.
Appointment after appointment, officers at the Defense Ministry couldn’t know who he was, but sent the family members to the Military Hospital in case the soldier was there for treatment.
Darfur has been a battle zone, and who knows Captain Hagos may have been injured in the battle, one of the family members would say, out of frustration and fear of what may have befallen their son. “I don’t think UN peacekeepers take part in war,” would say another one. A sister would say, “no matter what, I wish my brother is alive.”
But the outcome was more than what they bargained for: Captain Hagos Misgina’ body was found in the morgue, his coffin draped in a UN peacekeeping flag. Right?
The family burst in tears: Their son has been killed and his body was in the morgue for months, like an unknown soldier who would be buried in an unmarked grave.
A ranking officer with a UN peacekeeping force was dumped like a trash, as if he had no family members whatsoever.
The UN handed over the body to the TPLF, and TPLF had no cares on Earth to inform the family in a dignified manner.
The old woman who was yearning to see her son alive one more time was thrown into grief forever. Her son was buried in his native Alitena.
But family members who suspected a foul play searched the body of Captain Hagos for a clue of how he died. They found a bullet hole in the back of his head. Suspicious minds said he was shot at close range, and TPLF is very likely to be the silent killer.
There is no doubt the UN peacekeeping force has paid a compensation to the TPLF regime in US dollars. But TPLF ate the blood money.
According to UN records, Captain Hagos Misgina was killed on March 17, 2011. No further details.
